Project Clovergate: Page County Va’s “Watergate”

cloverPage County Va keeps going from one scandle to another There was the Landfill Gate, Danny Presgraves indictments and now Project Clover, Page County’s own Watergate. On a self proclaimed Page County Watch Blog, there is a lot of chatter about the Project. Recently in the Page News and Courier, Lowell Baughn, spokesmen member of the Page County EDA, had presented a reply that many citizens had been asking about the purchase of the Rebecca Graves Hudson Property. The answer he gave clearly contradicts the contracts agreed between the EDA and Rebecca Graves Hudson. From what is being told, Premiere Technical Services(PTS) is supposed to build on land that the EDA obtains and the EDA had enlisted the help from the Board of Supervisors to fund the money to the EDA to start the project and PTS is supposed to obtained the rest of the loan thru grants while at the same time, $358,000 is to be given to Rebecca Graves Hudson as tax free interest until the loan is paid off and has living will rights to part of the property. The citizens had not known of this until after the contracts had been signed between the EDA and the Estate of Rebecca Graves Hudson.

Battle for Business Park in Page County

rgh Within the next year, there is going to be a battle between the Page Board of Supervisors with the Page County Economic Development Authority against the residents of Page County. The reason? The potential purchase of the Rebecca Graves Hudson property to be used as a potential industrial park property. The problem is not the location, the problem lies in the amount that piece of property, whicj is just over 200 acres is going to cost. The asking price to the county by the property owners was $9 million. The selling price ended up at $7.5 million. The county has to pay out $1.6 million with the rest coming from potential USDA grants. Ppart of the deal states that any interest payments Rebecca Graves Hudson reciieves from the county will be tax free. There is some speculation that there may be a conflict of interest between Rebecca Graves Hudson and the head of the Page County Economic Development Authority as to why that peice of property is the main focus when there are potential, cheaper land avaliable esewhere. A petition to stop the sale of the property is being circulated in the county started by Winnie Kerkhoff and Jim Turner. To contact them, their numbers are: Winnie Kerkhoff 540-778-3215; Jim Turner 540-778- 2282 of Jim’s cell phone 540-244-8382.

Page County – “We Don’t Want This Garbage in Our County!”

It is not very often that the Board of Supervisors public meetings gets packed that they have to move. Sometimes I wondered if this happens to every meeting that things would be a little different. What has drawn out the crowd at this partucular March 24th meeting was on a proposed amendment to the county ordinance regarding adult businesses.

The proposed amendment would allow for adult businesses, defined as anything from an adult bookstore to a nightclub, in the county by way of a special use permit. The requirements to obtain such a permit follow a strict criteria, such as the adult business could not be near schools or churches. Even if all the criteria was met, the county could still deny a special use permit. “What can we do to stop this permanently?” asked Tom Rothgab. “I want a plan that can stop anything like an adult business from coming in here — something solid.” The public argued that such a business in the county would erode the social fabric of the community, increase crime, drug use and sexual deviance. Ok, now I know for awhile, D&S Jewlers had an ‘entertainment’ section in their pawn shop, made up of videos and ‘used’ toys. Why anyone would want to buy an ‘used’ toy is beyond me. If the county wants to get rid os smut and keep it ou of the county, it needs to start with the parents of the county. There is no reason that a male kid or a male needs to be walking down the street, with their boxers showing and their pant down around their knees with no shirt on in the middle of summer. There is no reason that a girl needs to walk down mainstreet, with shorts so high that theur butt cheeks are hanging out and their top is so small that if they jump, their boobs will pop out. The County has always had some type of adult business law and it was never enforced until the owner of Boot Hill, Chuck Bowen, wanted to bring in some exoctic dancers years ago. He had brought in the Chippendales first. All was fine. When he wanted to bring in the women, all hell broke loose. And it started with the women, who went to see the male dancers, who didn’t want their husbands to go see the women dancers. Eventually, Boot Hill had to close down because of other allegations. And now we have the internet. If people don’t want to go to an adult store, they can just visit one online. How do you think alot of child pornograhic pervets are getting caught in this county? See, an adult business does not have to set up shop here in the county, because no matter where they are at, they can be easily accessed.
